The Campbell family settled on this land around 1895. The father was Alexander (Sandy) Campbell, wife Jane Day and their children were Madge, William, Jennie and Alex. The Round Barn was purchased by Mark and Heather West in 1989.

The Round Barn in Thessalon was built in 1928 by Alex Jr. It is a twelve sided barn which is 60ft in diameter and 75ft high. Most barns are only eight sided, they are easier to build. Mark and Heather had the roof shingled in the spring of 2003, they are doing their best to preserve this unique building.

WHY BUILD A ROUND BARN???

* A circle encloses the greatest area with the smallest length of line of any plane figure. A sphere offers less wind resistance than a flat surface. The dome is one of the strongest shapes known.

* More convenient for feeding livestock and cleaning stalls, retain more heat in the winter and were easier to ventilate during the summer months.

* Round Barns provide more natural light, have more storage space and are less likely to loose a roof during a severe storm; you get more space with less building materials.
